1. Setup
Form teams, select a timer of 30, 60, or 90 seconds, and pick a dictionary category and difficulty. One player reads the word on the screen while teammates guess.
Explain the Word is a team party game similar to Alias: explain words to your teammates before time runs out. Use your own phrasing without saying the target word or words with the same root.
Play on a single device: choose the number of teams, round timer, word category, and difficulty level. Each guessed word grants one point, and skipping words carries no penalty.
Quick rules guide to explain words and start playing right away
Form teams, select a timer of 30, 60, or 90 seconds, and pick a dictionary category and difficulty. One player reads the word on the screen while teammates guess.
Within the allotted time, explain the word using any clues except the word itself and related root words. Gestures are allowed, direct translations and naming are not.
Each guessed word gives your team one point. Skipped words can be passed without penalty. When time expires, the turn moves to the next team.
